NFI glossary and dictionary

On this page you find the translations of woody species and of terms as well as their explanations (marked with yellow background), which were used in the NFI.

plantation
Stocking consisting of a single tree species (monoculture) established with agricultural methods (soil preparation, mechanical planting, fertilization), treated with a pre-determined thinning pattern and managed according to rather short production cycles (according to WT).

[D] Plantage
Baumbestockung aus einer einzigen Baumart (Monokultur), die mit landwirtschaftlichen Methoden (Bodenbearbeitung, maschinelle Pflanzung, Dungung) begrundet, mit schematischen Durchforstungen gepflegt und in relativ kurzem Produktionszeitraum bewirtschaftet wird (nach WT).

[F] culture d'arbres, ligniculture
Boisement composé d'une seule essence (monoculture), cultivé selon des méthodes agricoles, telles que travail du sol, plantation mécanisée, fumure, éclaircies schématiques et avec des temps de production assez réduits (selon WT).

[I] arboricoltura, impianto di
Soprassuolo arboreo costituito da un'unica specie arborea (monocoltura), realizzato con tecniche agronomiche (lavorazione del terreno, messa a dimora meccanizzata, concimazione), curato con interventi di diradamento schematico e con ciclo produttivo relativamente breve (da WT).

  • The German, French and Italien plant names were taken mainly from the book Die häufigsten Waldbäume der Schweiz or from the Flora Helvetica
  • The English plant names were taken form the internet (swiss web flora, PLANTS Database and Dictionary of Common Names by plantpress.com). The notations and abbreviations were taken from IPNI - The international Plant Names Index.
