NFI glossary and dictionary

On this page you find the translations of woody species and of terms as well as their explanations (marked with yellow background), which were used in the NFI.

crown closure
Measure of the pressure of the tree crowns in a stocking on each other (according to SAFE). In the NFI different levels of crown closure are differentiated: crowded, normal, loose, spaced, dissolved, crowded in groups, and normal in groups.

[D] Schlussgrad
Mass der gegenseitigen Bedrängung der Baumkronen einer Bestockung (SAFE). Im LFI werden die Schlussgrade gedrängt, normal, locker, räumig, aufgelöst, gruppiert gedrängt und gruppiert normal unterschieden.

[F] degré de fermeture
Expression de la concurrence réciproque des houppiers d'un boisement (selon CAFS). Dans l'IFN, on distingue les degrés comprimé, normal, lâche, aéré, clairiéré, en groupes comprimés et en groupes normaux.

[I] grado di chiusura
Misura della chiusura reciproca delle chiome degli alberi di un soprassuolo (da SAFE). Nell'IFN il grado di chiusura può essere stracolmo, normale, leggero, aperto, rado, stracolmo a gruppi e normale a gruppi.

  • The German, French and Italien plant names were taken mainly from the book Die häufigsten Waldbäume der Schweiz or from the Flora Helvetica
  • The English plant names were taken form the internet (swiss web flora, PLANTS Database and Dictionary of Common Names by plantpress.com). The notations and abbreviations were taken from IPNI - The international Plant Names Index.
