Field Surveys

photo

Field surveys provide the most important basic data for the NFI: tree-, deadwood-, young forest-, tree population- and surface data. Every year, three field teams visit approximately 800 sampling areas spread throughout Switzerland. It is hard, demanding work. Many sampling areas are difficult to reach or in an exposed location. Nevertheless, even here and despite bad conditions, survey work is performed carefully and precisely according to the surveying regulations. This is a basic prerequisite for comparing data with former inventories.

The NFI places great emphasis on quality control. This starts while recording surveys with consistency tests in the data entry program. Secondary surveys document the reproducibility of the initial findings. Periodic training courses test the teams’ credentials so that a consistently high standard is achieved.

Operations management guarantees the systematic execution of field surveys on professional and organizational terms.
