Not only is data on Swiss forests gathered by analyzing aerial photographs or field surveys, but also by interviewing Swiss foresters (approx. 830). The enquiry is used to estimate resource availability; it is also considered unique on an international level. It consists of four thematic blocks: a) planning guidelines, b) silviculture and forest use, c) wood harvesting, and d) development.
The range of possible applications for the survey data is manifold. For example, the data is used for statements on forest functions, forest management, certification, recreational use, calculating the costs of wood harvesting and forest development.
The results of the survey are not only of national importance; they are also incorporated into international reports.
