‘Greenhouse gas inventory’ module

Within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Switzerland is required to report the carbon balance of forest management and wood products. The NFI calculates the carbon fluxes for the ‘forest management’ part of this balance for the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN). The carbon stock in the forest and the biomass increment, as well as fellings and mortality, are determined based on the NFI data. Forest soil carbon and changes in soil carbon are estimated using the Yasso07 model. Additionally, in combination with the Massimo forest development model and in collaboration with Meteotest Ltd, the carbon balance of the forest and wood sector is calculated for accounting purposes under the Paris Agreement. All underlying models are continuously updated and improved based on expert reviews and on new data and guidelines.
