Die Waldfläche ist die Gesamtheit aller Flächen, die gemäss Walddefinition des LFI als Wald bezeichnet werden. Die Walddefinition schliesst Gebüschwald mit ein. Diese Zielgrösse (Thema) wird auch verwendet für Auswertungen der Gesamtfläche, wenn es um die Unterscheidung von Wald und Nichtwald geht.

Die Definition der Vegetationshöhenstufen im LFI (Brändli und Keller 1985) basiert im wesentlichen auf den Arbeiten von Ellenberg und Klötzli (1972) sowie von Kuoch und Amiet (1954, 1970). Die Vegetationshöhenstufen werden in Abhängigkeit von Keller-Region, Acidität des Muttergesteins, Exposition und Höhenlage hergeleitet.

Deckungsgrad der Verjüngung des massgebenden Bestandes. Berücksichtigt werden alle Pflanzen ab 0,1m Höhe bis 12 cm Brusthöhendurchmesser. Ist Verjüngung vorhanden (>1% der Bestandesfläche mit Verjüngung überdeckt), werden die Merkmale Verjüngungsart und Verjüngungsschutz erhoben. Das Merkmal gibt Aufschluss über die Verjüngungssituation im Bestand. Pflanzenarten, die als Verjüngung gelten, werden inventurspezifisch festgelegt, ebenso ist der Code inventurspezifisch.

Die Kantone sind politische Regionen mit auch eigenen Waldgesetzen. Die beiden Halbkantone Basel-Landschaft (BL) und Basel-Stadt (BS) werden im LFI aus statistischen Gründen zu einem Kanton zusammengefasst.

Zugehörigkeit zum zugänglichen Wald ohne Gebüschwald (z.W.o.G.) und innerhalb des SilvaProtect-Schutzwaldperimeters liegend. Unter der jeweiligen Inventurnummer gehören jene Punkte des terrestrischen Netzes zum "zugänglichen Wald ohne Gebüschwald", welche terrestrisch begehbar waren und dem "Wald ohne Gebüschwald" zugeordnet wurden. Im internationalen Reporting werden diese als "forest available for wood supply" ausgewiesen.
1.4 x 1.4 km grid #410
Zugehörigkeit zum geometrischen 1.4 x 1.4 km Netz des LFI (auch Basisnetz). Das 1.4 x 1.4 km Netz ist das Netz, das alle LFI-Inventuren gemeinsam haben. Das 1.4 x 1.4 km Netz entspricht somit dem gemeinsamen terrestrischen Netz der Inventuren LFI1, LFI2, LFI3, LFI4 und LFI5.
