Die Waldfläche ist die Gesamtheit aller Flächen, die gemäss Walddefinition des LFI als Wald bezeichnet werden. Die Walddefinition schliesst Gebüschwald mit ein. Diese Zielgrösse (Thema) wird auch verwendet für Auswertungen der Gesamtfläche, wenn es um die Unterscheidung von Wald und Nichtwald geht.

Im LFI3 und LFI4 wurden Abies sp. (nicht einheimische Tannen),Aesculus hippocastanum (Rosskastanie),Ailanthus altissima (Götterbaum),Buddleia sp. (Sommerflieder),Cedrus sp. (Zedern),Chamaecyparis sp. (Scheinzypresse),Chamaerops humilis (Zwergpalme),Cinnamomum camphora (Kampferbaum),Cryptomeria sp. (Sicheltanne),Ficus carica (Feige),Larix kaempferi (Japanlärche),Laurus nobilis (Lorbeer),Liriodendron tulipifera (Tulpenbaum),Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Urwelt-Mammutbaum),Picea sp. (nicht einheimische Fichten),Pinus nigra (Schwarzföhre) ,Pinus sp. (nicht einheimische Föhren),Pinus strobus (Strobe),Platanus sp. (Platane),Populus sp. (übrige, nicht einheimische Pappeln),Prunus cerasus (Sauerkirsche),Prunus laurocerasus (Kirschlorbeer),Prunus serotina (Spätblühende Traubenkirsche),Pseudotsuga menziesii (Douglasie),Quercus rubra (Roteiche),Rhus typhina (Essigbaum),Robinia pseudoacacia (Robinie),Sequoiadendron giganteum (Mammutbaum),Thuja sp. Von diesen Baumarten wird insbesondere die Robinie als Problembaumart im Wald betrachtet, sie steht auf der "Schwarzen Liste" der SchweizerischenKommission für die Erhaltung von Wildpflanzen (SKEW). Bäume, die auf dieser Liste stehen gelten als Arten, welche "in den Bereichen der Biodiversität, Gesundheit und/oder Ökonomie Schäden verursachen". Die Variable gibt die LFI Probeflächen wieder, auf denen (invasive) Neophyten bezüglich Vorrat dominieren. Als invasiver Neophyt (oder Problembaumart) wird hier nur die Robinie betrachtet. Es ist möglich, dass der Götterbaum in Zukunft auch als Problemart für Waldbestände eingestuft wird.

Die Zuteilung einer Probefläche zu einer Waldgesellschaft geschieht über ein statistisches Modell zur Schätzung der potentiellen natürlichen Waldgesellschaft (Küchler 2008). Die Variable klassiert die laut Modell wahrscheinlichste Waldgesellschaft in 7 Klassen.

Die Kantone sind politische Regionen mit auch eigenen Waldgesetzen. Die beiden Halbkantone Basel-Landschaft (BL) und Basel-Stadt (BS) werden im LFI aus statistischen Gründen zu einem Kanton zusammengefasst.

Zugehörigkeit zum geometrischen 1.4 x 1.4 km Netz des LFI (auch Basisnetz). Das 1.4 x 1.4 km Netz ist das Netz, das alle LFI-Inventuren gemeinsam haben. Das 1.4 x 1.4 km Netz entspricht somit dem gemeinsamen terrestrischen Netz der Inventuren LFI1, LFI2, LFI3, LFI4 und LFI5.
