Die Waldfläche ist die Gesamtheit aller Flächen, die gemäss Walddefinition des LFI als Wald bezeichnet werden. Die Walddefinition schliesst Gebüschwald mit ein. Diese Zielgrösse (Thema) wird auch verwendet für Auswertungen der Gesamtfläche, wenn es um die Unterscheidung von Wald und Nichtwald geht.

Angabe, ob es sich, basierend auf dem kombinierten Wald-Nichtwaldentscheid aus dem Feld und Luftbild, um "Wald ohne Gebüschwald" oder "Gebüschwald" handelt. Falls "Wald ohne Gebüschwald" vorliegt, wird zusätzlich angegeben, ob der Wald zugänglich ist oder nicht.

Vorkommen einer "speziellen Waldfunktion". Die speziellen Waldfunktionen von erheblicher lokaler Bedeutung werden pro Probefläche per Umfrage erhoben und basieren auf Planungsgrundlagen oder gutachtlichen Einschätzungen durch den Förster. Mehrfachnennungen sind möglich. Falls keine speziellen Waldfunktionen (wie z.B. Holzproduktion, Schutz vor Naturgefahren, etc.) angegeben wurden, hat der Wald nur allgemeine Funktionen (Klimaregulierung, Luftfilter, Lärmschutz, Bodenschutz, Sauerstoffproduktion, CO2-Senke, Wildlebensraum, etc.).

Die Kantone sind politische Regionen mit auch eigenen Waldgesetzen. Die beiden Halbkantone Basel-Landschaft (BL) und Basel-Stadt (BS) werden im LFI aus statistischen Gründen zu einem Kanton zusammengefasst.

Zugehörigkeit zum Wald. Dazu gehören jene Punkte des terrestrischen Netzes, die im kombinierten Wald-Nichwaldentscheid (terrestrisch und Luftbild) als "Wald ohne Gebüschwald" oder "Gebüschwald" bestimmt wurden. Es ist daher nicht zwingend, dass ein zum Wald gehörender Punkt auch terrestrisch besucht wurde.

Zugehörigkeit zum geometrischen 1.4 x 1.4 km Netz des LFI (auch Basisnetz). Das 1.4 x 1.4 km Netz ist das Netz, das alle LFI-Inventuren gemeinsam haben. Das 1.4 x 1.4 km Netz entspricht somit dem gemeinsamen terrestrischen Netz der Inventuren LFI1, LFI2, LFI3, LFI4 und LFI5.
