NFI glossary and dictionary

On this page you find the translations of woody species and of terms as well as their explanations (marked with yellow background), which were used in the NFI.

afforestation
Planting trees to establish a forest on an area which has always been unforested or unforested for a long time. If the time period is short, we talk about reforestation.

[D] Aufforstung
Das Pflanzen von Bäumen mit dem Ziel eine Fläche zu bewalden, die nie oder für lange Zeit unbewaldet war. Handelt es sich um kurze Zeiträume, spricht man von künstlicher Verjüngung.

[F] afforestation
Plantation d'arbres dans le but de repeupler une surface longtemps restée déboisée ou n'ayant jamais appartenu à l'aire forestière. Dans le cas de courtes périodes de déboisement, l'on parle de régénération artificielle.

[I] rimboschimento
Piantagione d'alberi con l'obiettivo di rimboschire delle superfici da sempre o per lungo tempo non boscate. Nel caso di periodi corti si parla di rinnovazione artificiale.

  • The German, French and Italien plant names were taken mainly from the book Die häufigsten Waldbäume der Schweiz or from the Flora Helvetica
  • The English plant names were taken form the internet (swiss web flora, PLANTS Database and Dictionary of Common Names by plantpress.com). The notations and abbreviations were taken from IPNI - The international Plant Names Index.
