NFI glossary and dictionary

On this page you find the translations of woody species and of terms as well as their explanations (marked with yellow background), which were used in the NFI.

forest type
Classification of forests according to a certain similarity in development, structure and tree species compositon (according to WT). In the NFI the forest types are classified by means of the attributes category of use, forest type according to the NFI Field Manual, forest form, stand structure and stage of stand development.

[D] Waldtyp
Zusammenfassung von Wäldern, die nach Entstehung, Struktur und Baumartenzusammensetzung eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit zeigen (nach WT). Im LFI werden die Waldtypen mit Hilfe der Merkmale Nutzungskategorie, Waldtyp nach Aufnahmeanleitung LFI, Waldform, Bestandesstruktur und Entwicklunsstufe gebildet.

[F] type de forêt
Regroupement des forêts avec une origine, une structure et un mélange d'essences plus ou moins homogènes (selon WT). Dans l'IFN, on distingue les types de forêt à l'aide des critères suivants : catégories d'exploitation, type de forêt selon le manuel d'instruction IFN, forme de forêt, structure du peuplement et stade de développement.

[I] tipo di bosco
Insieme dei boschi che mostrano similitudini dal punto di vista dell'origine, della struttura e della composizione delle specie arboree (daWT). Nell'IFN i tipi di bosco vengono definiti con l'aiuto dei parametri: categorie di utilizzazione, tipo di bosco secondo le Istruzioni per il rilevamento IFN, forma di governo, struttura del popolamento e stadio di sviluppo.

  • The German, French and Italien plant names were taken mainly from the book Die häufigsten Waldbäume der Schweiz or from the Flora Helvetica
  • The English plant names were taken form the internet (swiss web flora, PLANTS Database and Dictionary of Common Names by plantpress.com). The notations and abbreviations were taken from IPNI - The international Plant Names Index.
